Looking out of the ordinary.
How do you upgrade your look? By having stronger point of view.
Let’s take an example you see everywhere: Polo shirt and slacks.
Generic. Boring.
How do you upgrade that?
- Better fit all around. That takes you halfway.
- You put a twist on it. Make it have a point of view.
Practically speaking, here are two different ways to approach the idea:
The classically tailored approach (in-person business appropriate)
High rise trousers, with a pleat. Long sleeve polo. Shoe game doing something great—a sleek European style shoe. Or if not European, a high quality loafer, like the leisure handsewn from Alden. (I wore a variation of this outfit and posted a video about it here.)
The comfortable and louche approach (the work-from-home appropriate)
Wide-legged comfortable pleated pants. Relaxed style polo. Shoes are a little different—espadrilles, maybe, or huaraches for a bit more support.
This is a barrier because fundamentally so many people just want to blend in. They don’t like sticking out.
Having style makes you stand out.
You’ll have to get used to that if you want to up your style game.
