People in the clothing industry complain about the savage cycle of seasonal collections. Sell your summer goods off at deep discount in July and August—just when people need those clothes the most—so you can make room for cold-weather clothes in August and September, when it’s frankly still way too hot for anything remotely woollen. Post-COVID, some hoped perhaps we’d have a chance for a reset, since global supply chains stopped and everybody seemed to have a little time to readjust their expectations.

While that total reset hasn’t happened, we are seeing drop culture and perhaps logistical realities make themselves felt on the release schedule of clothes.

So now that it’s November, just 5-6 weeks away from the beginning of the sale season, new coats are dropping from some of my favorite shops.

And boy are they bringing the heat.

Wythe

First is Wythe, whose raglan coat is among my favorite. It’s very simple, but the way it drapes is outstanding. They’ve brought back the black/cream herringbone fabric again this season which is an excellent candidate as a coat similar to my “perfect coat.”

Pictured below is the brown herringbone coat I tried on when I swung by the shop this summer. Also check out the polo coat model as well.

Natalino

New to the outerwear game is Natalino. One of my favorite, go-to shops for tailoring (read my review here), their entrance to the outerwear game is exciting. This Wednesday their first coats drop, and they look promising as expected. The founder of Natalino, Nathan, is wearing a prototype of their coat in the photo below, and he would remind me to tell you that the prototype he was wearing is too short, so mentally add a few inches to the length.

Drake’s

I greatly appreciate how Drake’s has maintained its ability to project great style that pushes boundaries but still looks relatable and wearable. And they have absolutely maintained the quality, so you know that whatever you’re getting is going to be great.

Their outerwear selection is more varied, with their excellent raglan coat being out in full force as usual (another superb alternative to the “perfect coat”). But their chore coats, works jackets and short duffle coats are worth a look as well, for when you want something that’s easy to get into your car with.

Spier & Mackay

Rick over at Spier & Mackay is always churning out the stuff you could buy and fill out most of your wardrobe with, without ever shopping anywhere else. He’s always looking to tweak things as well, never wanting to rest on his laurels or over-milking the cash cow. So this season he has the balmacaans as you’d expect, but he also has this new belted double-breasted coat, and twill polo coats, and this new “liberty coat”, and harris tweed safari jackets, and wool flight jackets, and of course for the normies the basic topcoat.

Poszetka

I did a mini-review of Poszetka on my Instagram last week. It’s a Polish brand which makes tailoring in a north-meets-south kind of feel, made in Poland or close by, with a goal to create everyday wearable stuff. One of the things they sent me was an ulster coat, which is fantastic in the navy color I shot, but also in a cream and tan herringbone fabric.

Boltey

I discovered Boltey at Pitti in January and am pleased to see others are now beginning to give them some press, as well (at least on Instagram). They’ve dropped their latest Harris Tweed jackets, with more yet to come. The basic chore model is great (pictured below), but they also have some more interesting models based on various military and hunting jackets of yore.

No Man Walks Alone

With a variety of showings from brands like Document, Valstar, De Bonne Facture, Kaptain Sunshine, Beams Plus, Ikiji, Doppiaa, a sweet one-off from Taillour (pictured below) and their own collection made by Sartoria Carrara,  No Man Walks Alone brings their top-quality vision to bear in a way only they can do, being a small shop with a focused collection.

Mr Porter

The exact opposite of the above, with a sprawling collection of 2,500 pieces defined as “coats and jackets,” there’s bound to be something for everyone at Mr Porter. To sort through everything, I usually just filter by the designers I know I tend to like, and go from there (which is what I’ve done for the link above). Some selections that catch my eye: this Kingsman DB coat (pictured below), this Monitaly belted coat, and De Bonne Facture’s grandad coat (also available at No Man Walks Alone but mostly sold out).

Stay warm out there folks, and enjoy some killer coats!
