I have a mind to pick up a cashmere sweater sometime soon. Navy, crew neck, nothing exciting, just the classics.
So I swung by Brooks Brothers to decide what size to get. While I was at it, I grabbed their cable knit cashmere, too, because those have tended to fit differently in the past (I took the same size in both, turned out).
I noticed that both sweaters are 2-ply, as listed on the label. In years past, Brooks made their standard cashmere 3-ply (actually there are still some on the website now so perhaps they still make them) and the cable knit was actually 4-ply (my brother has one of those). Way back when, I even wrote a post comparing various makers in this price range, and concluding I preferred the lighter ply sweaters.
2-ply isn’t worse than 4-ply, mind you—it’s just how thick it’s made. Frankly I prefer the lighter, 2-ply sweaters, since I’m in climate controlled areas most of the time anyway, and it makes it easier to layer under a sport coat if you so desire.

Hi Mitchell-
Question on the sizing of this sweater- what size is it, and is that your normal size? No surprise, I’ve found the BB sweaters to be “generously” cut, which results in a baggy waist section and sloppy look (on me anyway, a pretty typical medium, or 38-40 coat in most brands). But your sweater looks to be pretty trim- the way i like it.
Thanks,
Dan
I’ve felt that way in the past, too, but my normal size (M) is what worked. I tried sizing down but it was way too tight in the sleeves.
The baggy midsection is just because it’s cut fairly straight, and the elasticized hem hugs the hips so it billows out above that. I’d probably just have a tailor taper it slightly in the waist if it bothered me, because otherwise the fit is good (sleeves, shoulders, chest, etc.).
Thanks-
Appreciate your thoughts!
