I worked four days in Florence for Styleforum, taking photos all day, outputting about 60-70 worthwhile street style images each day to post to the Styleforum Journal. I posted about a half dozen or a bit more on my own Instagram in the afternoons, and also on my Instagram story to create some hype and momentum for the coverage we were providing.
I don’t know how everybody else does it, but my personal goal each day was to look for men who were dressed well, but in a slightly elevated way, without being tacky or over the top. Whether that be cool patterns on a jacket, or a color palette that was unique but not flashy, or even a perfectly executed cut and silhouette, that’s what I was looking for. The line between boring and that is difficult to draw; and finding those people in the crowds of people as they walked into the fair—with the bright morning sun shining directly into your eyes—was difficult. You might notice I shot some of the same people each day, and people who other photographers shoot often as well. That’s because if you recognize someone you already follow in the industry for their style, you almost know as soon as you recognize their face that they’ll be well dressed, so you do what you need to to snap them. But finding the others who you don’t know, and who meet your criteria, is obviously the challenge.
Anyway, I wanted to highlight my own personal favorite images on the street that I shot. They are all owned by Styleforum, and reproduced here with permission.
