In April, I ordered a washed chambray shirt from Proper Cloth for my wife. I wrote about it at the time and promised an update when it was delivered.
In early May, the shirt arrived—around 3 weeks earlier than Proper Cloth estimated—and turned out really well.
The fade of the indigo is a nice medium-light shade, which I figure will fade with washes and wears over the coming months into a great light wash. The fabric we used is the “light wash indigo chambray”, and it’s great. The color of the indigo wash is a nice middle-of-the-road color—not super cyan, not super green, right in the middle.
My wife loves the shirt, though she doesn’t love how big the buttons are. We picked the 2-eyelet corozo buttons, which match the casual design of the shirt very well, but we did not know that they were physically larger than normal buttons. I think it’s great, but she would prefer buttons that are a little more incognito—and since the buttonholes were cut larger to accommodate them, it’s not like we can just easily swap them for smaller ones. It’s not a dealbreaker for her, but is the only drawback.
I think the design details we chose for her are perfect in all other regards. I worried that most of their collar choices are physically too big for the smaller frame of a woman (at least on this kind of workshirt-inspired design). But the “Soft point collar”, which is their smallest collar, is just right. On a different style of shirt—not chambray—I could also see the vintage club collar working well (though I doubt my wife would go for that). Otherwise, I particularly like the western flap pockets.
See a screenshot below for all the other design choices we made on the shirt.
Perhaps I’ll convince her to let me snap a fit pic of it when she’s wearing it at some point.
