Recommends—Spier and Mackay Long Sleeve Polo

I’m a big fan of the long sleeve polo. It’s like a level up from the typical tennis-style shirt you normally find. Worn on its own with rolled sleeves it’s flattering but if it’s got a collar that will stand up well, it looks great under a tailored jacket. The Eidos Lupo was an all time favorite for its beautiful one piece collar (which many others have now copied).

This classic photo of Gianni Agnelli is the quintessential long sleeve polo inspiration photo.

Spier and Mackay did a run of long sleeve polos last year and apparently they’ve sold so poorly they’re practically giving them away now. They have a moderate spread collar and three button hidden placket. It’s constructed like a dress shirt in the collar and cuffs with an interlining that feels stiff at first, but softens up exceptionally after the first wash.

SIZE UP. They fit slim. The white one I have hasn’t shrunk with cold wash and a line dry but some say the other colors are more prone to shrinkage.

For $20 they’re an easy choice to throw in your cart when ordering something else. Highly recommended.

  1. I think your overall look would benefit from jackets with more closed quarters and/or pants with a higher rise.
All of this is to counteract the distracting shirt triangle that peeps through at your waist.

    1. I don’t disagree, though in this case, it’s more accentuated in the pic from my pose, and also these are super low-rise jeans. I wear them anyway because you get dressed in the wardrobe you have, not the one you wish you had. Also, with a fit like this the jacket is usually unbuttoned anyway. I definitely do want to get some higher-rise light wash jeans, but it’s low enough on my priority list that it likely won’t be any time soon.
And also, I’ll wear jackets with more closed quarters when I’m dead! LOL not to be dramatic but my personal preference is strongly in favor of open quarters and I don’t foresee my tastes changing any time soon.
      Thanks for the comment!
