One of my foundational attitudes about clothing is not to take it too seriously, and not to become too obsessive over it—at least, externally. Internally, of course, I am totally sweating the details. It’s taken me years to get a wardrobe of tailored jackets I like because there are so many specific little things I want out of something I’m going to spend a lot of money on. And my strong emphasis on opportunity cost means that whatever I buy, I want it to be the thing, because there are enough things to spend money on besides clothing.
But at the end of the day, the clothes themselves aren’t a means unto themselves. They are the means to an end—which is expressing my style, dressing in a way that I like, and all those uncomfortable things like covering my insecurities. A closet full of jackets is useless if they just hang there and are never worn.
One of the details I’ve thought about over the years is having a balanced wardrobe, that is, one that is roughly equal in available pieces to wear in both warm and cool seasons. With the most recent addition of the Spier & Mackay green summer jacket, I’ve more or less attained that in my sport coat collection. I thought I’d post photos of each one alongside their seasonal counterparts.
