(This is part 3 of a 6-part series on brands I scoped during Pitti 106. Parts 4-6 will be published sequentially, so keep an eye out for those!)

One of the things I do while at Pitti is snap the watches I notice on peoples’ wrists. This time, I noticed a couple of friends of mine happen to have on a brand of watch that sounded vaguely familiar to me but which was not yet firmly established in my brain: Unimatic. It turned out they had a booth at Pitti, so I walked there alongside Greg Lellouche of No Man Walks Alone (who happened to be wearing one of their watches).

Unimatic is a new company based in Milan, making serious steel watches with sometimes not-so-serious designs—Spongebob, South Park and Mickey Mouse are among their collaborators on previous editions. Yet the basic case shapes and design language on the majority of their pieces is derived from established, serious historical time-telling tools for those in the field.

Handling the watches in person, I can say they have a high-quality feel that’s worth the price of admission. The mechanical movements are Swiss-made Sellita movements, which are solid, workhorse movements. At this price point, that’s right in line with what you’ll find from anybody else.

But what Unimatic brings compared to others in this range is a fresh take, whether that’s in the form of a goofy cartoon character, or simply a highly legible, serious diver with no design-by-committee corporate “branding” flourishes that larger companies tend to tarnish their watches with.

If you’re looking for a good mechanical watch in this price point, give Unimatic a look.
